Mirror exercises are a great way to direct the dialogue to your inner self.  Many people find these types of exercises effective.  They can also be very challenging as we are our worst critics sometimes, and when we look at ourselves, we are not kind.

Some people may find it hard to say nice things to their inner selves.  They have trouble coming up with supportive statements or have trouble accepting supportive statements.  Pay attention to that and be gentle with yourself as you move forward.

Look at yourself in the eye as best you can when you conduct these exercises.  Try not to look away.  Be kind and loving.  If your inner critic comes up then apologize to yourself.
