Compassion Exercise
Cultivating Loving-Kindness
Loving-kindness is the deliberate practice of directing caring wishes toward yourself and toward other people.
BookmarkAbout This Practice
Loving-kindness is the deliberate practice of directing caring wishes toward yourself and toward other people. It is not the manufacture of a feeling. You do not need to produce warmth, and nothing has gone wrong if none arrives, you offer the wish sincerely and notice what is there. The practice widens in a particular order, starting with yourself and moving outward, because the wish gets harder as it goes and it helps to begin where you can mean it. This is the compassion step of the method, practiced in both directions at once.
In this exercise you will begin with yourself, repeating four wishes silently. May I be happy. May I be healthy. May I be safe. May I live with ease. You will offer them to yourself twice, leaving time after each phrase rather than hurrying to the next. Then you will bring to mind someone you care about and offer the same four wishes to them, and then a neutral person, someone you neither like nor dislike, and then a mildly difficult person. If resistance appears there, you will acknowledge it, keep any boundary you need, and offer only the wish you can offer sincerely. Then you will include several people from your daily life, and finally widen the same four wishes to all beings, returning to the phrase you were on each time attention moves away.

Cultivating Loving-Kindness
Practice Methods
Meditation
Sit or lie down comfortably, with your eyes closed or resting softly. Follow along with the audio recording.
Writing
Write the four wishes for yourself: May I be happy. May I be healthy. May I be safe. May I live with ease. Write the same wishes for someone you care about, then for a neutral person. Choose a mildly difficult person. Write the wishes for them without pretending to approve of their behavior. Record any resistance honestly. Finally, write: May all beings be happy. May all beings be healthy. May all beings be safe. May all beings live with ease. Review what you wrote and note which stage felt easiest and which required the most effort.
Inner Child
Sit comfortably and bring to mind a younger version of yourself, or look at a childhood photograph. Follow the audio recording while keeping your younger self in mind, and direct the practice toward the needs, beliefs, or experiences of that younger self.
Mirror
There is no mirror version for this practice.
Real-World Practice
Use this during ordinary encounters or while waiting, walking, or sitting somewhere safely. Choose yourself or someone nearby. Silently offer the wishes: May you be happy. May you be healthy. May you be safe. May you live with ease. You do not need to feel a particular emotion or change how you interact. Practice the intention of goodwill and continue with awareness.
Micro Practice: Just Three Breaths…
- Breath – Acknowledge this moment of connection.
- Breath – Silently offer happiness, health, safety, and ease.
- Breath – Carry that intention into what you do next.
