Offer Compassion Before Trying to Change
When you recognize distress, the first task is not to pressure yourself into feeling better immediately. Compassion means becoming aware of the distress and setting an intention to be kind and helpful to yourself, the way you would treat a friend who was struggling. Acknowledge what you are experiencing without judging yourself as bad or broken. Ask what would be genuinely helpful right now. That may be rest, support, more information, or one small step toward understanding the problem better. Kindness creates room for honest investigation and skill building.
Three Breaths
- Breathe — Notice the distress without pressuring yourself to feel better.
- Breathe — Treat yourself as you would a struggling friend.
- Breathe — Ask what would genuinely help right now — rest, support, or one small step.
