About This Practice
Before a more balanced belief can be built, it helps to loosen the grip of the old one. That is what diffusing means, holding a belief far enough away that you can see it as a belief, rather than as a fact or as part of who you are. You are not arguing with it here, and you are not trying to prove it wrong. You are recognizing that it no longer serves you, and letting it lose some of its power. Beliefs tend to come in connected clusters, so loosening one is a step rather than a finish.
In this exercise you will choose one limiting, critical or unhelpful belief and state it clearly, without adding an argument. You will picture it as a ball in front of you, noticing its size, weight, colour or texture if those details come. Then you will say, I notice you, and you no longer serve me because, and complete the sentence in your own words. You will take a breath in, and on the out-breath picture the ball becoming smaller and moving further away, continuing over several breaths until it fades or reaches whatever distance is available today. Then you will check your body for any change in tension, weight, emotion, or the intensity of the belief. After that you will choose another belief and work through the same sequence again.

Ways to Practise
Meditation
Sit or lie down comfortably, with your eyes closed or resting softly. Follow along with the audio recording.
Writing
Write one limiting or critical belief. Complete the sentence: I notice you, and you no longer serve me because… Pause and notice your physical and emotional reaction to what you wrote. Write what changes, if anything, when you hold the belief at a distance instead of treating it as a fact or identity. Repeat the sequence with two or three beliefs, one at a time. Finish by reviewing the beliefs and noting which one lost even a small amount of its grip.
Inner Child
There is no inner child version for this practice.
Mirror
Sit or stand where you can see your reflection. Use a soft gaze. Bring to mind one limiting or unhelpful belief. Say silently or aloud: I notice you, and you no longer serve me because… Complete the sentence. On the out-breath, picture the belief becoming smaller and moving away. Notice what changes in your body as you hold the belief at a distance. Repeat with two or three beliefs, one at a time. Finish by acknowledging what you noticed without demanding that every belief disappear.
Real-World Practice
Use this when a limiting or critical belief appears during your day. Notice the belief and name it. Say silently: I notice you, and you no longer serve me. Name one reason why. On the out-breath, picture the belief becoming smaller and moving away. If it returns, repeat the process without treating its return as failure.
Micro Practice: Just three breaths…
- Breath – Notice the limiting belief.
- Breath – Say that it no longer serves you and name why.
- Breath – Picture it shrinking and moving away.
That completes an introduction to all four steps. Next, let’s wrap up what you’ve learned.
